Garage Door Panel Replacement
Rust has crept along the bottom edge of the lowest section. What began as bubbling paint is now a soft, flaking strip, the seal retainer is working loose, and a screwdriver pressed against the worst spot goes through the steel.
Garage Door Panel Replacement
In plain words
Everything about a section replacement flows from knowing exactly which door you have. Two doors that look alike from the driveway can differ in section height, thickness, the shape of the joint where sections meet, where the hinges bolt on and how the skin is embossed. A new section has to share all of those details to seat cleanly against its neighbours. So the visit starts with a hunt for the manufacturer's label, usually on the edge of a section or on the track, followed by measurements and photographs. With that identity confirmed, the right section can be ordered with confidence rather than hope.
How the visit goesYou misjudged the last metre of the driveway and felt the bumper meet the door. The bottom section now carries a crease across most of its width. The door still opens, but it shudders as that section reaches the curve in the track.

How the visit goes
Is a matching section still made?
Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.
Bottom section: brackets, seal and cables
A new bottom section arrives bare, so its working parts are fitted on site. Bottom brackets are bolted to each end, with the cable attached and the safety tab in place, and a roller set in each bracket. The seal retainer is fixed along the bottom edge and a new astragal is slid into it so the door meets the floor evenly. The lift cables are laid over the drums, the springs are wound back to the correct number of turns for the door's height, and the set screws are tightened. The door is then eased off the floor by hand to confirm the cables are seated and even on both sides.
The colour over the first season
A fresh factory finish beside weathered sections shows for a while, and you should expect that rather than be surprised by it. Sun and weather will change the new colour somewhat over a season or two, but weathering does not reliably bring it into line with older sections, and a visible mismatch can persist even with the same factory colour designation. If the contrast is more than you would like, the door can be repainted as a whole with an exterior paint suited to the finish, which also refreshes the older sections. Keep the colour name and code from the order; it makes a later touch-up or a second section far simpler to match.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Whether the exact section is still made
A current model is a straightforward order. A discontinued design may mean a section from a related series, a custom-made section, or a discussion about the whole door, each of which lands differently on the quote.
2Access and working room
A section is wider than the door opening and is carried in and manoeuvred by two people. A cluttered garage, a low ceiling around the spring, or a tight driveway adds handling time.
3How many sections are affected
One section is the base case. Two adjacent sections add a second unit and its hardware but share the setup; three or more usually prompts a comparison with a complete door so you can weigh both.
Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions
Can a wood garage door section be replaced?
Yes, though wood doors are more often site-built or made in small runs, so a matching section may be made up by a door shop rather than ordered from a catalogue. The new section is primed and finished to match, the hardware is transferred, and the technician looks closely at the neighbouring sections for rot or splitting, since wood sections tend to age together. Where several are failing, a new door is discussed.
How long does it take to get a replacement section?
Sections are made to order for a specific model, size, position and colour rather than kept in stock, so there is a lead time from the manufacturer. It varies with the maker, the colour and the season, and the technician confirms the expected timing when the order is placed. In the meantime the door is left in a safe state, either in normal use or braced and closed, depending on the damage.
My door is insulated. Does the new section need the same insulation?
It should. Insulated sections come in different thicknesses and core types, and the replacement needs to match yours so the joints line up, the hinges sit at the right depth and the weight stays consistent with the springs. Mixing an insulated section into an uninsulated door, or the reverse, generally means a step at the joint and a change in balance. The technician reads the thickness and core type from the door before ordering.
